2016 ASEM Youth Week: Stronger action to poverty reduction

2016 Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Youth Week in conjunction with the Model ASEM, themed “Stronger actions to address the hunger challenge”, aims to raise awareness among the youth of their potential in poverty eradication.

The events was co-organised by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Youth Union, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam, ASEF and British Council. The ASEM Youth Week was an initiative co-sponsored by Vietnam, Brunei, Ireland and Laos, which was endorsed at the 10th ASEM Summit in October 2014 in Milan, Italy.

 The activities aimed to realise Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s initiative at the 10th ASEM in 2014 in Italy, which was sponsored by Brunei, Ireland and Laos and supported by all ASEM members.

 This was the first time Vietnam hosts the events which aim to improve the awareness of Asian and European young people on collaboration for hunger eradication and poverty reduction to develop sustainably and equally while creating a forum for young people to exchange and share experiences and initiatives in order to enhance understanding among ASEM members and boost stronger actions to eradicate hunger and reduce poverty, contributing to ASEM’s efforts in realising the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development.

 

The event also played the roles of high-level leaders of ASEM members to discuss the forum’s three pillars: politics, economics and socio-culture. A joint declaration was adopted at the model ASEM’s closing ceremony.

Participants to the two events joined volunteer activities with local youths in Hoanh Bo mountainous district, northern Quang Ninh province. They also visited and presented gifts to underprivileged ethnic minority students here.The delegates visited a model of effective start-up agribusiness by a young local in De E village, Le Loi commune, Hoanh Bo district.

The event enhanced the youth’s understanding of Asia-Europe partnership and the ASEM process, raising awareness among the youth of potential cooperation on poverty eradication, and providing them a platform to take actions in the fight against hunger.

Vietnam had a chance to introduce international friends about achievements of the country to fulfill millenium targets and Vietnam’s creative picture after 30 renewing years.

At the closing ceremony, the conference gave a general declaration. Some representatives participated into some voluntary activiites, model of economic-making youth in Quang Ninh province and awared to children in difficult condition as well as other cultural exchange programs.

The events attracted over 100 students and young representatives from nearly 30 ASEM member countries. They heard two specialised reports on the situation of hunger eradication and poverty reduction in ASEM member countries and the role of businesses in creating jobs for young people.
